Science Policy and Advocacy

I am interested in the intersection of scientific research and legislative policy. Scientists have historically been underrepresented stakeholders in the political process -- yet, there is a need for scientists to communicate the broader societal impacts of their research, as well as accurately communicate its strengths and weaknesses in accessible manner so that it can be incorporated into legislation that affect the public's everyday life. To this end, I am part of a group, the Austin Science Advocates , that seeks to become effective science advocates by informing ourselves of current issues, engaging in policy discussions, and building communication skills. We strive to improve the use of evidence-based policymaking and improve the public's perception of science and the scientific community.
